Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What happens if I fail the exam?
If you fail one of our tests for the G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario - Security Guard Training, then you
will need to re-write the test that you failed (you must get 80% to pass). The tests are set up so that you will learn as you go.
You need to continue studying until you are able achieve 80% or more consistantly.
If you fail the Ontario Security Guard Test
(Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services), then you will need to pay the $60+HST fee again and re-write it. You will
not be able to apply for or re-new your Security Guard License without passing the Ministry Test.
G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario will
continue to work with you until you pass the Ontario Security Guard Test. We currently have a 95% pass rate on the first time our
student's write the test, so it's not too likely that you won't pass. But just in case. We're there. No extra cost.
Why did Lowell
Security Inc. make it's private Security Guard Training services available to everyone?
G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario has been providing trained
security guards for over 22 years. The company has developed inhouse training to ensure that our clients were receiving the best protection
available. Because of the distance in Northern Ontario, online training was the most effecient method of training our own employees
in remote locations.
G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario is also part of the G.U.A.R.D.S. Ontario association that assists clients in finding reputable
security companies and trained guards in remote areas of Northern Ontario. Again, access to online training for the member companies
was required, and G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario met the need.
When the Ministry of Safety and Community Service brought in mandatory security
guard testing, G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario agreed to become a registered training provider and opened up their training service to the public.
Our services have always included online classrooms, easy to use tools, student focused systems and access to knowledgable professionals.
What do I receive from G.U.A.R.D.S. Ontario and G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario when I complete my training?
You will receive a Certificate of
Completion ready for framing that includes your Training Number.
How do I become a Security Guard?
Everyone working in the security industry requires a license. You must be a minimum of 18 years
of age and have no criminal background. To receive a Security Guard License you must:
1. Pass Security Guard Training
from a trainer recognized by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
2. Pass the Ontario Ministry
of Community Safety and Correctional Services Security Guard Test. ($60+HST)
3. Submit a Security Guard Application to the Ministry
of Community Safety and Correctional Services. ($80 anually)
I don’t have an Ontario Security Guard Licence, what do I need to do?
1. Complete a recognized 40 hour Security Guard Basic Training
Course including certification in Emergency Level First Aid (32 hours security guard training + 8 hours first aid training).
2. Pass
the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services test
3. Complete and submit the New Licence Application for a Security
Guard provided on the Ontario Ministry of Safety & Community Correctional Services website.
If you have already taken
and passed the Ontario Security Guard Test, and received a new Security Guard License after April 2010, then
you only need to submit the Security Guard License renewal form to get your license again.
Every security guard, doorman,
bouncer, in-store security, loss prevention guard, etc, in Ontario must pass the Ontario Sercurity Guard Test ONCE before they can
apply for or renew their Security Guard license.
I have police foundations / corrections from college, do I have to take the
Security Guard Training?
Yes, currently police foundation and corrections worker programs from community colleges in Ontario do not
include Mininstry of Community Safety and Correctional Services approved Security Guard training. Please check with your college
to determine if this training was added. If it was, then the administration should be able to provide you with your Security
Guard Training Completion Number. Use this number to register for the Ontario Security Guard Test at
www.OntarioSecurityTesting.com
How difficult is the ministry test?
The Ontario Provincial Security Guard Test will ensure that you know the basics of the Security
Industry by testing your knowledge of the ministry mandated curriculum.
The curriculum covers Report Writing, Health and Safety, Emergency
Response Preparation, Canadian Legal System, Use of Force Theory, Effective Communications and Sensitivity Training among other things.
Most security guards are not trained in all areas of sercurity. Being a guard in a mall requires different skills and knowledge of
the law than being a guard on patrol or directing traffic. Most of us will need to learn some new things to pass the Test.
New or
currently unlicensed security guards will need training that meets the Ministry regulations and is from an Ministry Approved Training
Provider. You can find a list of training providers at http://www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca/english/PISG/TrainingandTesting/TrainingEntities/training_entities_list.html
In March 2010, before the testing began Brian Roberson who writes for the Canadian Security Magazine, “As many as 10,000 to 12,000
of the first 80,000 people who write the tests will fail them.”
More reciently, perdictions are "10K out of 30K failure rate" from
Blue Line Magazine, Online Forum for Law Enforcement.
http://forums.blueline.ca/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=21772&start=15 That means
Blue Line Members think that 1 in 3 people will fail the test the first time.
Since the passing grade for the test is around 62% or
37/60, and the failure rate is still high, it is a good idea for experienced and licensed guards to prepare for it instead of just
trying to wing it.
For those who are new to the industry, you need to register for a reputable and effective Ministry recognized,
Security Guard Training Course that meets the Ministry requirements.
Will my certifications be recognized by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services?
Our Security Guard training meets
the requirements as set by The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. The Ministry Approved Security Guard Training
program includes First Aid and CPR training. Upon successful completion of the exam, each student will receive certification by Canadian
Red Cross, in Emergency First Aid and CPR level A. Canadian Red Cross certification is recognized around the world.
As industry specialists,
we regularly review our curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of our employees working as Security Guards and our clients in
the community.
Is online training hard?
No, online training is NOT hard. Our systems are easy to access, easy to understand, and easy to use. Our
systems are designed for the first time user. We knew when we designed the training that many of G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario's employees
had never touched a computer before, so it was important to us that they feel comfortable and relaxed doing our online training.
Is
your online training effective?
This training was developed to train our own guards. When the mandatory tests for Security Guards
began in April 2010, we needed to ensure a high pass rate. Every one of our guards that failed was potentially a lost employee. Our
online training was extensively tested and adjusted to maximize our employees ability to pass the Ministry Security Guard Testing.
Is Job Assistance available, when I complete my program?
G.U.A.R.D.S.Ontario is not employment agency, nor can we guarantee work.
G.U.A.R.D.S. Ontario does invite Licensed Security Guards to send in a resume that will be forwarded to
the member company covering their region.
The web cam is needed for your video classroom. You must participate in the video class
to pass the training. The headset is needed to reduce unnecessary feedback, noice and echo from the video classroom.
